Historic Interpreter I (Part Time)
DESCRIPTION
Share the story of Zebulon Vance and the early history of Western North Carolina as an interpreter at Vance Birthplace. The Historic Interpreter I serves as the primary public contact at the visitor information desk, leads pre-written interpretive tours of the house and grounds, assists with artifact collections care and inventory, makes sales and stocks the gift shop, performs light housekeeping and maintenance duties, and completes other duties as assigned. This position is part time (12-20 hours per month), predominately on Saturdays, with a 31-day furlough each year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Greet and interact with a wide variety of site visitors in an open, friendly manner.
- Present pre-written interpretive tours for groups of up to 25 people.
- Adapt tours to the audience based on age, special interests, time constraints, or level of interest.
- Read assigned materials and perform additional research in-order-to provide visitors with accurate and balanced information.
- Learn and apply site and state policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Stand for long periods of time and walk up to five miles daily over uneven terrain.
- Possess some knowledge of state and national history.
- Possess some knowledge of archival practices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must have 1) a high school diploma or equivalent and 2) one year of part-time work experience giving museum tours or in customer service; two years of college education in history, interpretation, education, anthropology, public speaking, or a related field (for a total of at least 60 semester hours); or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
