Last week, Appalachian Barn Alliance volunteers spent two mornings with 4 wonderful classes of 4th grade students from Mars Hill Elementary School. Students were brought to the Smith Farm on the Bailey Mountain Preserve. While there for 2 hours, they rotated through several experiences. Our researcher Taylor Barnhill walked them around each of the 3 barns. The ABA volunteers introduced them to Roger Howell who grew up close by the Smith Farm. Roger told stories about the arrowheads and rocks he found on the property and finished by playing his banjo. Students sketched barns before getting back on the bus for the second part of the field trip. They stopped at the First Bank building which is the historic Connor-Smith house and then were treated to lunch at Pittman Dining hall on the MHU campus. All of this was courtesy of a grant from First Bank Mars Hill.
